How rug size shapes the ambience of your home

Too often, rugs are perceived merely as functional additions to the home. But they're so much more than practical layers that cover your floor. They’re actually among the most powerful interior design levers, each possessing a unique ability to add decorative visual interest or even transform the ambience of your space completely. 

When choosing a rug to achieve your personal design goals, it's important to pay particularly close attention to size. After all, the size of your rug shapes how pattern, color, texture, luster, and furniture show up in the space around them.

The same rug pattern can have two entirely different effects on a space depending on its size.

Consider a small patterned rug: It serves as an accent in a room, occupying minimal space and leaves room for you to experiment with more patterns. You can add patterns into upholstery, throw pillows, drapery and other decorative elements, and the result will feel character-rich without overpowering the space. Now, when the same pattern is applied to a larger rug, the mood of the room is transformed. If that rug extends all the way across your space, with just a few inches separating it from the wall, it becomes a visual anchor. Because patterned rugs have a stronger presence at a larger scale, you’ll find that they look better when accompanied by solid upholstery and decorative textiles.

But not all patterns carry the same visual weight. Some are subtle, and others are statement-making. 

Hugo in Light Grey has a tonal lattice pattern that adds subtle visual intrigue, even when it extends across a whole space on a large rug. Bennett in Warm Multi, however, has a higher-contrast plaid pattern that, on a rug of the same size, will make a stronger statement. So if you want to ground your space with a pattern, consider the intensity of the pattern as it relates to the size of the rug.

As with pattern, color’s impact on a room is determined by how much of the floor it covers.

At a small scale, color, like pattern, reads as a decorative touch. Whether light or dark, bright or muted, a minor touch of color might capture your eye for a moment when you enter a room, but it won’t shift the ambience entirely since it isn’t occupying the full space. When the rug is large, though, the effect of the color changes. A large light-toned rug, such as Lissie in Cream, fills the room with an airy and expansive feeling, while a large deeper-toned rug, like Hannah in Olive, makes it feel more intimate.

The temperature of your desired rug color, in combination with the rug size, will also influence the mood of the room. A large rug in a warm earth tone, like Hannah in Ochre, feels inviting and envelops the space in grounding warmth and comfort. For that reason, you might consider warmer undertones for a living room or seating area. A large rug in a cool neutral, like Kyra in Dark Teal, feels more sophisticated, making it more suitable for a home office or library.

Texture plays a unique role in shaping comfort within a space. While pattern and color alter the mood visually, texture changes the mood through the way it feels to the touch, and the power of a rug’s tactility is informed by how much space it consumes.

At a small scale, a little bit of wool draws attention as a textural detail. If you expand that texture across a larger rug, it becomes the atmosphere of the room, setting a sensory mood for the whole room. At a large scale, Calamus in Cream and Cora in Sage are perfect for the living room, because their plush wool textures welcome you to lounge on the floor while watching television or playing a board game with the family. An equally large indoor/outdoor flatweave rug like Marci Salt or Willow is better suited for the kitchen or breakfast nook, where a low-profile style feels grounded underfoot.

Luster enhances the effect of the texture and size, shaping how a rug’s tactility interacts with light, and how that light affects the appearance of the surrounding space. 

Take a large lustrous rug like Fleur in Champagne. It’s made from luminous viscose fibers, and when placed in a room that gets direct sunlight exposure, it reflects light across the room it occupies to establish a lighter, brighter feeling. On the other hand, a large flatweave rug with a matte finish, like Cally in Olive, will absorb light and keep the space feeling cozy. Take a smaller lustrous or matte rug, and the effect of the finish on the room’s mood decreases.

The rug size you choose also impacts how your furniture shows up in a room, so it’s especially important to consider size if you already own furniture for the space at hand.

If you’re moving into a home with large rooms, but your furniture is generally small, bear in mind that a large rug will make each piece feel even smaller. If you have generously proportioned furniture, though, you’ll find that it looks balanced atop a large rug because the size of the furniture and the rug complement one another. With smaller rugs, you’ll find the opposite. Small furniture will feel right at home, while bigger pieces will feel even bigger, potentially overpowering the rug beneath them.

In addition to considering the overall dimensions of your furnishings relative to your rug, consider the form of each piece. In the dining room, slender, exposed chair legs and open seat backs allow light to flow through, meaning those furnishings have less visual weight. As a result, they best complement a smaller rug. But in the living room, fully upholstered pieces that sit low to the ground, like sofas and lounge chairs with recessed legs and generously proportioned arms, don't allow for as much light flow and breathing room, so a larger rug ensures they feel balanced relative to their surroundings.
